Legal letterheads carry more mandatory detail than most. Depending on the jurisdiction and the firm's structure, that can include the regulator the firm is authorised by and its authorisation number, the firm's legal structure, a registered office, and in some places a list of partners or a note of where that list is kept. These are requirements set by the relevant professional body, so check yours rather than following another firm's footer.
This is one of the few cases where the footer may need to run to several lines. Keeping it small and tightly set, rather than cutting the content, is usually the right trade.
Formality as a working choice
Legal correspondence is read by opposing parties, courts and clients, sometimes all three for one letter. The conservative visual register — serif heading, restrained colour, clear structure — is doing a job there, not just following tradition. A letter before action set in a geometric sans with a bright accent undercuts its own tone.
Where firms do modernise successfully, it is usually in the typography rather than the colour: a contemporary serif, better spacing, a cleaner footer, with the overall gravity left intact.
